Climate Risk Management – Insights from the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change

File No.: CP2014/09416

Purpose

1.       To provide an update on the Fifth Assessment Report by the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change, and the resultant opportunities, challenges and uncertainties in managing climate related risk.

Executive summary

2.       The Fifth Assessment Report by the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) is the most comprehensive global summary of current knowledge on past and future climate change, of the risks arising from those changes, and of options to manage those risks by both reducing greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions and adapting to unavoidable changes.

3.       Dr Andy Reisinger, Deputy Director at the New Zealand Agricultural Greenhouse Gas Research Centre, was a coordinating lead author for the Fifth Assessment Report of the IPCC.  As an IPCC author, his focus was on climate change impacts and adaptation options for Australia and New Zealand.

4.       Dr Reisinger has been invited to make a presentation to the Committee on the findings about climate change impacts and risks specific to New Zealand, with particular attention to issues relevant to the Auckland region. Dr Reisinger will also discuss the opportunities, uncertainties and constraints in adapting to those changes, and their interrelationship with efforts to reduce GHG emissions at the national and local level.

Recommendation/s

That the Environment, Climate Change and Natural Heritage Committee:

a)      Receives this report

b)      That a presentation from Dr Andy Reisinger, Deputy Director at the New Zealand Agricultural Greenhouse Gas Research Centre be received
