Request for funding support from Zeal for an “event box”

Purpose

1.       This report considers the request from Zeal for support towards building an “Event Box”, a truck with a foldout stage and support equipment that will also provide a learning opportunity for young people who will staff the resource.

2.       It is recommended that the Whau Local Board consider allocating $10,000 by way of a grant to support this enterprise.

Executive Summary

3.       The Whau Local Board received a deputation from Zeal and resolved to request a report to consider support.

4.       Zeal is a youth agency Henderson providing youth activities, support and learning opportunities.

5.       The Event Box project is a truck mounted stage with supporting production equipment. It will enabling event management and sound, projection and lighting education.

6.       The total project cost is $278,106 with $210,493 already secured from government, philanthropic trusts and Auckland Council. 

7.       The recommended funding support is for the development of the resource with ongoing operational support to be considered separately.

 

Recommendations

That the Whau Local Board:

a)      Allocates a grant of $10,000 Zeal form the Community response fund budget line to support the Event Box project.

b)      Notes the opportunity for local young people to receive training and experience.

c)      Requests staff to consider opportunities for the Event Box to be utilised in the Whau local board area.

 

 

Comments

8.       The Board received a deputation from Zeal at its October meeting that presented the proposal and opportunity to support. The Board resolved to request a report to consider support.

9.       Zeal is a long standing youth development agency operating in Wellington, Henderson and Hamilton with a fourth planned for Kapiti coast. In Henderson Zeal provides youth activities, support and learning opportunities particularly around hospitality and music activities.

10.     The Event Box project is for the development of a truck mounted stage with supporting production equipment. It will provide a platform for formal and informal education around event management and sound, projection and lighting. The current and projected event programme will provide numerous opportunities for the system to be utilised and to provide practical experience for the students.

11.     The total project cost including project development, truck stage and production equipment is $278,106. At the time of the deputation Zeal had secured $210,493 from government, philanthropic trusts and Auckland Council.  Henderson-Massey and the four North Shore local boards have contributed.

12.     The recommended funding support is for the development of the resource with ongoing operational support to be considered separately.

Consideration

Local Board views and implications

13.     The Local Board Plan identifies community events and youth activities and programmes as key initiatives to support our Great Communities. The development of youth skills delivers on the board’s local economic development plan.

Māori impact statement

14.     This project will support celebrating Maori identity in the Whau and provide opportunities for young Maori to extend their skills.
