Dear Members,
I would like to use this opportunity to update the Board on a number of key projects arising from my portfolios.
Community Development
Over the past month there has been a range of discussions around the Local Board’s role in supporting youth employment. I have attended a number of meetings regarding Youth Connections, including the Mayor’s Youth Employment Traction Plan launch on Wednesday morning this week. I do not believe the Board’s role should be to create another service in Manurewa, but it is to support the organisations which are already working in this area within our community and I look forward to receiving support and advice from officers and ATEED staff on how this may happen.
Mangroves
A meeting was held on the 7th of April at the Manurewa Marae to discuss the next steps in the programme to remove mangroves from along the foreshore in the Puhinui estuary near Manurewa Marae. The first date for removal has been set for the 24th of May. This is a significant event, and is a key milestone in the Board’s advocacy to begin the process of restoring our beaches to our communities. I look forward to seeing many people from across our community at this event and other mangrove removal events to play their part in this process. The Board allocated $93,000 to this project in June last year, and I am working with officers to ensure that all of this money flows directly into mangrove removal.
Town Centre
The Manurewa Town Centre Manager Wendy Dunn has been doing exceptional work in the Town Centre. An operations group has been set up to bring Council departments together to resolve a number of issues relating to the safety and cleanliness of our Town Centre. I have been attending these meetings from time to time, and the group is working productively and delivering results. Manurewa is very fortunate to have Wendy working for the Manurewa Business Association, and she is achieving great results for our community.
Legal Highs
The Governing Body has done too little too late on this issue. I am pleased we will be taking more action on this issue tonight to speed up the process of a Local Approved Products Policy in Manurewa. I attended a community meeting in Waitakere on the 21st of March about this issue. People are being hurt by these drugs, and we have a responsibility to have a LAPP put in place as soon as possible to protect our community and young people from these substances. I also spoke at CAYAD’s regional hui on the 26th of March, where my message was that ‘approved products’ under the Psychoactive Substances Act must be less harmful than marijuana which is an illegal substance.
Royal Tour
The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge are currently touring New Zealand with 8 month old Prince George and will be touring Auckland tomorrow. This tour is of significance to our country and for our future.
It is amazing to think that for the past week, New Zealand has been centre stage as the whole world eagerly watches William and Kate sample what our beautiful and bountiful country has to offer in our innovative culture and industries.
Last year, Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II celebrated her Diamond Jubilee - 60 years of service to New Zealand and our international Commonwealth community made of some 53 countries.
Tonight I would like to present to the Manurewa Local Board a portrait of Her Majesty, the Queen of New Zealand, which I recommend should be sitting on the wall of our Board room in a tradition followed by many Council chambers up and down our great nation.
Let’s celebrate our national heritage, the Treaty partnership, and the bright future for our country.
Yours Sincerely
Simeon Brown
Manurewa Local Board Deputy Chair
