Tahuna Minhinnick, respected community leader and chief treaty negotiator for Ngāti Te Ata, passed away suddenly on Friday, 4 March 2016. The chairperson read out the following message of condolence:
“I would like for us to acknowledge the sudden passing of Tahuna Minhinnick.
Tahuna was a leader for Ngāti Te Ata. In 2010 he was elected as lead treaty claims negotiator for his iwi’s 9 wai claims. Tahuna has also been actively progressing a special housing area for Glenbrook that is to see homes and jobs for local iwi as a priority.
Tahuna had a very active interest in Māori health, he built a marae-based health and fitness centre in 1981, he produced children’s aerobic programmes which screened on television and he was active in developing health websites and whanau-based health software.
Tahuna’s love for his family and his mana whenua was obvious – he was a strong advocate for Maori and he will be missed by all who have had the opportunity to learn from him.
Our condolences go to his whanau, in particular his wife Lisa, his three children Atea, Ngaiwi, Brian and his mother Dame Nganeko Minhinnick.
Please stand for a moment’s silence as we pay respect to Tahuna Minhinnick.
Arohanui ki a koe te Rangatira.”

Resolution number MR/2016/17 MOVED by Chairperson AM Dalton, seconded by Member GW Hawkins: That the Manurewa Local Board: a) thank Gloria Norfolk, Sue Matete and Daniel Newman, petition organisers, for presenting the petition requesting the installation of traffic calming devices for Wattle Farm Road, Wattle Downs. b) request the petition with 109 signatures with the following prayer be forwarded to Auckland Transport for investigation and report back:
“We the undersigned strongly and urgently request Auckland Transport to install traffic calming devices along Wattle Farm Road, Wattle Cove/ Wattle Downs with particular attention to the stretch of road from the roundabout at Muirfield Street to the roundabout where Wattle Farm Road merges with Carnoustie Drive. This stretch of road has seen two accidents in the past two years, the latest accident occurring 11 February 2016. Both these accidents involved excessively speeding vehicles and occurred at times when people are still walking along the footpaths and other vehicles are using the road. The first accident was at 11am on a Saturday morning and completely wrote off a parked car, after demolishing a tree and then pushing the parked car into the next door neighbour’s property. A couple of minutes earlier and two small children riding their bikes along the footpath would have been killed. The second was at 9.30pm on a week night. The speeding car lost control and hit one of the two cars parked in a driveway. The car then sped away from the scene. The vehicle involved in this second accident was witnessed during the same afternoon at around 3.30pm – 4pm drag racing another car along this same stretch of Wattle Farm Road. This is at a time when children etc are on their way home from school. The irony is that these two accidents happened in the exact same area of Wattle Farm Road.
Racing along Wattle Farm Road has been on-going for years and it has now come to the point where we need some immediate action to be taken to make this area safer, not only for other users of the road but for pedestrians and for the protection ratepayers’ property.
Auckland Transport has been made aware of these accidents and previously requested to install traffic calming devices. We urgently request consideration on this matter.” |
