Auckland Transport presentation

 

A PowerPoint presentation was provided. A copy has been placed on the official minutes and is available on the Auckland Council website as a minutes attachment.

 

Jacki Dawson, Bus Services Experience Manager, Auckland Transport spoke to the presentation and answered questions from panel members.

That the Disability Advisory Panel:

a)      receive the verbal update from Jacki Dawson on Auckland Transport’s plans for accessibility.

Auckland Design Office

 

Cr Sharon Stewart entered the meeting at 10.33am.

 

 

Elise Copeland, Principal Specialist – Universal Access and Design and Philip Wihongi, Māori Design Leader introduced themselves to the panel and provided an overview of their role.

That the Disability Advisory Panel:

a)      receive the introduction and role overview from Elise Copeland and Philip Wihongi of the Auckland Design Office.

Disability portfolio update

 

Martine Abel, Specialist Advisor, Community Empowerment spoke to the report and answered questions from panel members.

 

 

Resolution number DIS/2016/21

MOVED by Member S Sherrard, seconded by Member C Brown:  

That the Disability Advisory Panel:

a)      receive the update on access and inclusion initiatives across council and ask the community empowerment unit to look specifically at the issue of whether disabled people have adequate access to suitable accessible housing, including direct communication with agencies such as CCS Disability Action and Access Able.

b)      request staff to report on any recent developments concerning the number of disabled staff employed by Council.

Waitemata Local Board Accessibility Plan Review

 

Martine Abel, Specialist Advisor, Community Empowerment spoke to this report in the absence of John Herring, Deputy Chairperson.

 

 

Resolution number DIS/2016/22

MOVED by Chairperson C Lansink, seconded by Member D Hughes:  

That the Disability Advisory Panel:

a)      receive the verbal update from Martine Abel concerning a review of the Waitematā Local Board Accessibility Plan.

b)      request Council to note that with regard to approvals for temporary constructions, when assessing the impact on the surrounding area, attention must be given to accessible facilities such as access routes and car parks.

Disability Advisory Panel Work Programme

 

Andrew Wood, Lead Officer Support addressed matters relating to the panel’s work programme.

 

The chairperson provided the following supporting documents:

·         Pop-Up Globe Theatre

·         Accessible Toilets Kept Locked in the Metro Centre.

Copies have been placed on the official minutes and are available on the Auckland Council website as a minutes attachment.

MOVED by Member D McKenzie, seconded by Member J Farrar:  

That the Disability Advisory Panel:

a)         note progress with the Panel’s work programme.

Resolution number DIS/2016/24

MOVED by Chairperson C Lansink, seconded by Member D McKenzie:  

That the Disability Advisory Panel:

b)         note the concerns as expressed by disabled people who were unable to enjoy the recent Pop-Up Globe Theatre event celebrating the immense contribution by William Shakespeare to English literature.

c)         express its serious concern to Auckland Council that, despite its Arts and Culture Strategic Action Plan and Disability Operational Action Plan, people with various disabilities were inadequately catered for by the recent Pop-Up Globe Theatre event.

d)         ask Auckland Council to note the information as provided above by the chairperson, to investigate all the circumstances surrounding the planning and implementation of this event, and take all reasonable steps to ensure that disabled people can fully participate in and enjoy future events of this nature and that these concerns be also drawn to the attention of ATEED.

Resolution number DIS/2016/25

MOVED by Chairperson C Lansink, seconded by Member C Brown:  

That the Disability Advisory Panel:

e)         ask Council to note the information from the chairperson concerning Accessible Toilets Kept Locked in the Metro Centre and ask staff to fully investigate the obligations on building owners and tenants to ensure accessible facilities such as toilets are able to be used by disabled people on the same basis as other members of the public.

f)          note with respect to the Metro Centre in particular, the work already done by Council Staff to resolve the issue, but ask Council staff to continue to take all reasonable steps to work with the building owners and tenants to ensure the accessible toilets are kept unlocked in the same way as the other toilets.
