Rainbow Communities Advisory Panel

27 June 2016

 

 

Panel members introduced themselves around the table. The co-chairperson formally recognised and congratulated member Lexie Matheson for being awarded an Officer of the New Zealand Order of Merit award for services to performing arts, education and LGBTIQ rights.

 

In addition, the co-chairperson formally recognised previous staff member Cissy Rock for being awarded a Member of the New Zealand Order of Merit award for services to gay, lesbian, bisexual, transgender and intersex communities.

That the Rainbow Communities Advisory Panel:

a)         accept the apologies from Co-Chairperson Jordon Harris and Members Mark Fisher and Audrey Hutcheson for absence.

That the Rainbow Communities Advisory Panel:

a)         confirm the ordinary minutes of its meeting held on Monday, 23 May 2016 as a true and correct record.

Feedback from the internal gender-neutral toilet signage trial

 

Julian Gonzalez, Workspace Business Partner was in attendance and he referred to three additional submissions received by the closing date on 24 June 2016. Member Merv Taueki-Ransom undertook to talk to Dr Huhana Hickey about the preferred icons and signage wording.

Resolution number RAI/2016/33

MOVED by Member L Matheson, seconded by Member A Wu:  

That the Rainbow Communities Advisory Panel:

a)      review and consider the feedback from the internal gender-neutral toilet signage trial.

b)      agree to the following preferred icons and signage wording:

Toilet icon

“All Gender” words  Wheelchair icon

c)      request installation of new signage in the 135 Albert Street and Bledisloe House buildings be completed by 22 August 2016.

Progress report on The Proposed Auckland Unitary Plan

 

Debra Yan, Principal Planner, Unitary Plan was in attendance to speak to the report and answer questions from panel members.

That the Rainbow Communities Advisory Panel:

a)      receive the progress report on the Proposed Auckland Unitary Plan.

Human Rights Act 1993 amendment strategy sub-committee

 

Note:   Changes to the original motion were made with the agreement of the meeting.

 

Resolution number RAI/2016/35

MOVED by Member L Matheson, seconded by Member A Wu:  

That the Rainbow Communities Advisory Panel:

a)      form a sub-committee comprising Members M Clunie, A Hutcheson, B Kilmister, L Matheson (lead), J Watson and A Wu to discuss a strategy on amending the Human Rights Act 1993.

b)      agree that the above sub-committee present to the Community Development and Safety Committee on Wednesday, 3 August 2016 on behalf of the panel.

Rainbow Communities Advisory Panel presentation to Community Development and Safety Committee on 3 August 2016

 

Liaison Councillor Cathy Casey noted that the theme of the Community Development and Safety Committee’s meeting on Wednesday, 3 August 2016 was LGBTI and invited the panel to present on its achievements and dreams for the future. Panel members noted that in addition an update on LGBTI homelessness would be provided to the Committee.

MOVED by Member J Radford-Poupard, seconded by Member B Kilmister:  

That the Rainbow Communities Advisory Panel:

a)      form a sub-committee comprising Members B Kilmister, J Radford-Poupard (lead), D Rands and M Taueki-Ransom to make a presentation to the Community Development and Safety Committee on Wednesday, 3 August 2016, on behalf of the Rainbow Communities Advisory Panel.

CARRIED

 

The meeting adjourned at 7.50pm and reconvened at 8.03pm.

Rainbow Communities Advisory Panel Sub-committee update, June 2016

 

Member Aram Wu provided a verbal update on the community summit event and sought clarification on the purpose and questions to ask at the summit. It was agreed that the relevant questions were:

  • How do we make Auckland a more liveable Rainbow city, and
  • How do you want to be involved with the Rainbow Communities Advisory Panel?

Members Bruce Kilmister and Diana Rands provided a verbal update on the 30-year homosexual law reform celebration event and identified areas where panel involvement was required.

Resolution number RAI/2016/37

MOVED by Member B Kilmister, seconded by Member D Rands:  

That the Rainbow Communities Advisory Panel:

a)      receive the verbal updates from the community summit and 30-year homosexual law reform celebration sub-committees and thank Ateesh Patel, Event Organiser (Civic Events) for his assistance with both events.

b)      approve a budget for the community summit.

Member J Watson retired from the meeting at 9.00pm.

Rainbow Communities Advisory Panel letter to Mayor Len Brown, Auckland Council

 

A copy of the letter to Mayor Len Brown, still to be signed by both co-chairpersons, was tabled at the meeting. A copy has been placed on the official minutes and is available on the Auckland Council website as a minutes attachment.
