Bellyful North Shore - 2017 monthly "cookathon" series

Dates

15/01/2017 - 15/07/2017

Location

Harbourside Church, 48 Esmonde Road, Takapuna (we are not affiliated with the church but they regularly allow us to use their kitchen to cook our meals)

Summary

Bellyful North Shore cooks and delivers meals to families with newborn babies and families with young children who are struggling with illness. We hold monthly “cookathons” at a donated semi-commercial kitchen to cook the meals, then deliver them to families as needed. Each family receives at least three meals after being referred to our service by a midwife, Plunket nurse or someone else who is in contact with the family in those early stages. The purpose of our organisation is to make families feel supported during a time when they need it most with a new baby – at dinner time! Currently we cook and deliver over 350 meals each year to North Shore families – however this number is growing!

Cost of participation

No. Our meals are provided to families free of charge.

Requesting grant for

Bellyful North Shore is requesting funding for a monthly series of 6 “cookathons” in 2017. The funding will pay for the ingredients required to cook our meals. We make three key meals for our North Shore families; lasagne, spaghetti bolognese and macaroni cheese. We are totally volunteer run so any money that we raise is spent on the packaging for our meals, phone bills (to coordinate referrals) and ingredients for the meals we make. Volunteers use their own cars and petrol to deliver the meals and the use of semi-commercial kitchens in which we cook our meals monthly are donated.

Active participants

We have over 20 local volunteers who are involved with cooking and delivering meals.

Audience size

We estimate that we will deliver meals to around 100 families; this number depends on the referrals we receive.

Promotion of activity

Yes, We have been growing the overall profile of Bellyful North Shore and what we do through linking with organisations such as Plunket,  Parent Centres, midwives and GP practives and providing them with pamphlets. Bellyful North Shore has an active Facebook page and we have also been featured in the North Shore Times. The majority of our referrals for families who need our support come from Plunket, midwives, maternal mental health nurses and from people who have heard about our service.  We plan to continue to promote our service through fundraisers, social media and promotional materials.

Local board recognition

Local Board members will be invited to attend and participate in one (or all) of the cookathons. Bellyful North Shore will acknowledge the local board's contribution on our Facebook page which has a strong local following, as well as acknowledging the contribution to all media if featured. We can also potentially include the local board logo on some of our printed material.

Alignment with local board priorities

·      neighbourhoods and community-led initiatives are supported and encouraged

Bellyful North Shore cooks and delivers meals to families with newborn babies and for families with young children who are struggling with illness, where there is little or no family or social support. We are passionate volunteers who believe that cooking and delivering meals to families during this time will help make them feel cared for and part of the local community. Our activities support the key priority of supporting and encouraging neighbourhood and community-led initiatives. All our volunteers are local, we cook and deliver our free meals in the local area and we make local families feel supported.,

Summary

Our project involves presenting two hour, structured Spoken Word poetry workshops at schools in the Devonport-Takapuna Local Board area.  There is no cost to the students or the schools.

Spoken Word poetry (also known as performance poetry) is increasingly being recognised as an incredibly effective way for young people to reflect on and share their experiences, express themselves and use their voice for change.

The workshops are held at local schools with 20 to 30 students aged 15 to 18 for each workshop. Participation in the workshop will introduce participants to spoken word poetry, have them gain writing and literacy skills, build their build confidence and self-esteem through self-expression and generally ignite an interest in learning.

We run Spoken Word Poetry workshops for young people at local secondary schools. Spoken Word poetry is increasingly being recognised as an incredibly effective way for young people to reflect on and share their experiences, express themselves and use their voice for change.  This programme very much fosters a thriving community and very much celebrates diversity, vibrancy and communities. It allows participants to gain confidence, develop a healthy self-esteem, build resilience and connect with others - all of which are hallmarks of a community celebrating, learning and growing through this art form.,

Summary

The Sports Excellence Awards are designed to recognize outstanding achievements and contributions of local athletes and sportspeople in the North Harbour Region. The event targets all athletes and sportspeople in the region and anyone has the opportunity to be nominated for recognition - several of the 16 categories include Sportsman/woman of the Year, Volunteer of the Year, Regional Team of the Year etc. It is important to acknowledge the individuals who go above and beyond to contribute to sport and recreation including coaches and volunteers so we can continue to foster the growth and development of this essential cultural area. The evening consists of an awards ceremony, a guest speaker to inspire and motivate and highlights of the past year's successes.
