George (Hori) Pomana was of Ngāti Kahungungu and Ngāi Te Rangi descent. He was born in Nuhaka, Wairoa, and raised by his grandparents on Matakana Island in Tauranga. He attended South Auckland’s St Stephens College and trained as a teacher at Palmerston North Teachers College. In 1986 Hori was employed as the Maori teacher at James Cook High School. Before that he taught at various schools in South Auckland, and was an itinerant Teacher of Te Reo Māori in the South Auckland region. He dedicated his life to the community of James Cook High School in Manurewa and was well known in the wider Manurewa community. He tutored the school kapa haka rōpū which was named Te Kapunga in 1989. They regularly placed at Auckland’s ASB Polyfest Secondary School competition and Te Ahurea Tino Rangatiratanga. He was instrumental in establishing the wharenui at James Cook High School, named Te Pou Herenga Waka, which was opened on 23rd October 1994. In 2004 he formed and headed Puutake Te Wahanga Māori, the Māori Unit at James Cook High School. Hori was not only an exceptional educator he also promoted team activities and was chair of a former chair of Auckland Region Outrigger Canoe Association and former chair of Counties Manukau Softball Association. Hori leaves behind a lasting legacy not only for Māori, but also in the sport of waka ama. He founded the Te Pou Herenga Waka Ama Club in 2005, based at Weymouth. The club has competed and won titles at national and world competitions. He encouraged the pursuit of excellence and had a significant passion for youth. It is a huge loss for the Manurewa community. Resolution number MR/2017/5 MOVED by Chairperson A Dalton, seconded by Member A Cunningham-Marino: That the Manurewa Local Board: a) receive the verbal report from: i) Councillor Daniel Newman regarding: - Regional Waste Strategy – Needed to be reviewed. While the council’s regional approach worked for some communities it does not work for others. Proposed length of introduction of this policy is far too long. - Cemeteries Services – expressed concerns over service delivery in this area of council as had received some complaints from families about the way they had been dealt with. - Transport Network – urban development outstripping improvements in transport infrastructure. Existing transport infrastructure already under huge pressure. - Urged the Manurewa Local Board to advocate to the Governing Body to undertake a review of the Open Space Policy and make a change to the Reserve Contributions Policy. Open space development is not keeping up with the pace of growing communities. |
