Member Joseph Allan noted that XRACE event is planned at Totara Park on Saturday, 23 March 2019. XRACE is an adventure race where parent and child race together, locate and complete mystery challenges while racing the clock and all the other family teams. Member Bill McEntee noted Pahurehure Inlet Protection Society’s work towards restoration of the inlet, the work included removal of mangroves. Papakura Local Board has received a presentation from PIPS on their work. Member Chris Makoare noted that Mangere bridge is now permanently closed because of concerns about public safety. The bridge links the Onehunga and Māngere Bridge communities. The gates on the bridge have been permanently locked and four security guards are patrolling the bridge 24/7 and CCTV is being installed. The Old Māngere Bridge is more than 100 years old and its condition has been deteriorating for some time. The transport agency is upgrading the underpass next to the Manukau Harbour Crossing motorway structure, which has a walking and cycling track under the road deck. This will be the alternative route connecting the Onehunga and Māngere Bridge communities until the replacement bridge is built. Deputy chair David Holm noted that a letter from Chairperson, Saffron Toms and himself (on behalf of Manukau Harbour Forum) has been send to both Stephen Town (Auckland Council CEO) and Councillor Penny Hulse (Chair Environment and Community Committee) seeking their assistance and advocacy support to Stats NZ and asking for release of Stats NZ land use survey data which can be used for the hydrodynamic modelling. Deputy chair David Holm also noted that Puketapapa Local Board has been made aware of issue of religious artifacts/ cultural offerings being dumped in the Manukau Harbour. Puketapapa Local Board is working on a ‘Religious and Memorial Practice’ sign with the purpose of educating people around the issue and what can and cannot be dumped in the water.
