The board wishes to acknowledge the recent passing of Roger Giles, President and Master of Ceremonies (MC) of the Devonport Folk Music Club located at The Bunker on Takuranga / Mt Victoria. Mr Giles held these positions with the club for over 35 years. Mr Giles emigrated from his native England to New Zealand in 1964 and, in addition to his duties as the club president and MC, he was also involved in weed and rubbish removal on Takarunga / Mt Victoria and at Ngataringa Park in Devonport. Mr Giles was highly influential in the 1972 Devonport Borough Council decision to remove cattle from Takarunga / Mt Victoria, and often took leave from his job as a quarantine officer with the Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry (MAF) to assist with weed and rubbish removal in the community. During his time at the club, Mr Giles organised yearly spring-cleans and helped negotiate the rent of The Bunker from council for $1 per year. He was also known to provide impromptu tours and the history of the club and The Bunker to any tourists that happened to stop by. Members of the club state that Mr Giles was pivotal in keeping the folk scene alive in New Zealand, and that he will be missed by ‘folkies’ all over the country. |
