Acknowledgment - Passing of Marlene Borell

Resolution number MR/2020/83

MOVED by Member A Candy, seconded by Member R McLean:

That the Manurewa Local Board:

a)   acknowledge Marlene who passed away at her home in Greenmeadows

Avenue on Friday last week. She lay at home on Saturday 4th July and

was taken back to Tauranga on Sunday to be interred with her dear

husband, the late Reginald ‘Doc’ Borell on Monday 6th July.

Briefly Marlene and Doc Borell, together, have absolutely stamped their

imprint on Manurewa.

Doc was a Trustee/Treasurer for the Manurewa Marae Trust Board and for

many years the whole family was active in fundraising for the building of

what was to become the Manurewa Marae complex.  In fact, their son Nigel

became a voluntary student of Whakairo under Peter Boyd (who was a

tutor at St Stephen’s School). Which led to Peter mentoring Nigel, as a

James Cook High School student, in designing and undertaking the

beautiful Kowhaiwhai and Mural artwork within the Wharenui “Matukurua”

from 1997 through to the opening in 1999.  From these humble beginnings

with the support of his parents, Nigel has climbed the Arts and Culture

ladder and is currently the Maori Art Curator at the Auckland Art Gallery.

Marlene was an active member of the Maori Women’s Welfare League in

Manurewa, and she was the Founder of Te Kaha o te Rangatahi, initially set

up as a wrap-around service for teen mothers and their babies in Panmure,

then extended to Otahuhu/Papatoetoe and finally reviewed and refocused

to youth in general.  It is worthy to note that Te Kaha o te Rangatahi are an

integral part of Manurewa Marae to this day, and participated in the Covid-

19 response by packaging 30,000 hygiene packs for the people of

Manurewa.

May another taonga from Manurewa, Marlene Borell, rest in peace with her

dear husband Reginald ‘Doc’ Borell and rise in glory.

Moe mai te moengaroa, Marlene, moe mai, moe mai, moe mai.
