6.1

Acknowledgement – Weymouth Boat Ramp Stakeholders and Council Staff

Member Ken Penney made the following statement on behalf of the board:

While campaigning in Weymouth before being elected to my first term on this board, I was asked if I could do something to improve the state of the local boat ramp. After I was elected, I set out to do exactly that. From then to now, it has taken around a decade for the upgrade of the boat ramp to be completed.

About midway through that decade, I said we would have a pig on a spit to celebrate at the opening of the ramp when the work is done. I am happy to say that, on Saturday 30 January, we were able to do this as the upgraded boat ramp was officially opened. All of the stakeholders, residents and general ramp users enjoyed the moment and had a great day.

The Manukau Harbour is a priority in our local board plan, and we see this boat ramp as being a gateway to the harbour. For these reasons, I am very proud to see this work completed.

On behalf of the board, I would like to acknowledge the council staff who have been part of getting this project finished. I’d especially like to thank Shane Hogg and his team for all the time and effort they have put into the project, and the Local Board Services staff who have worked with the board over the years to keep things moving along. Many thanks to all staff involved for a job well done.

Resolution number MR/2021/3

MOVED by Member K Penney, seconded by Chairperson J Allan:

That the Manurewa Local Board:

a)         acknowledge the council staff, Ngāti Te Ata, Weymouth Boating Club, Weymouth Yacht Club, Te Pou Herenga Waka Ama Club, Coastguard Papakura and Weymouth Sea Scouts for their contributions to completing the upgrade of the Weymouth Boat Ramp.

Resolution number MR/2021/4

MOVED by Member R McLean, seconded by Chairperson J Allan:

That the Manurewa Local Board:

a)         acknowledge Member Ken Penney for his work to improve the Weymouth Boat Ramp. Ken has been a tireless advocate on behalf of the Weymouth community and boat ramp users for the past decade. He has worked to see this project through to completion across four terms as a board member and through many changes in staff and council departments. We thank Ken for his fortitude and hard work, and congratulate him on getting the job done.

6.3

Acknowledgement – Manurewa Marae COVID-19 Community Response

Resolution number MR/2021/5

MOVED by Chairperson J Allan, seconded by Deputy Chairperson M Atama:

That the Manurewa Local Board:

a)         and Councillors would like to acknowledge the leadership and manaakitanga of Manurewa Marae in supporting Papatoetoe High School through the recent COVID-19 testing of all students, teachers and whanau. To quote the Principal of Papatoetoe High:

“What an exceptional bunch of human beings. People put themselves potentially in harm's way, to help everybody out. So we had a fleet of volunteers, that just made everything easier.”

While acknowledging other Maori organisations stepped up including Papakura Marae and Ngā Whare Wātea Marae –  we would like to especially say how proud we continue to be of our marae, Manurewa Marae and all who mahi there as they continue to wrap around not just our people in Manurewa but all affected by COVID-19.
