Project: Venue Hire x 2 rooms

Location:

Redhill Community Centre 163 Dominion Road, Papakura

Summary:

We use the Redhill Community Centre to hold our weekly Tuesday Peer Support Groups. This venue is the best fit for us as alongside our Peer Support Group we offer a childminding service therefore, we require 2 rooms. Redhill Community Centre has a purpose built childcare room that we also hire.

We have been offering our service at the Redhill Community Centre now for 4 years and we have built up a lovely relationship with them. We refer our women to their services and they in turn refer women to us. It is great to be working in a community space like this.

Expertise:

We are confident that the model that Well Women Franklin follows works. Our group was formed after the tragic suicide of a mother in our community who was suffering from PND. This was 13 years ago and our community is fortunate that no other family has had to go through an event like this.

Again, this past year we have seen increases in women attending our peer support groups. We currently have 160 women that we are in contact with, 85 regularly attend our 5 peer support groups each week. The other women, may come along once or twice per term and are in touch with us via our telephone support.

Community benefits

Identified community outcomes:

We meet a huge need within our community, many women attending group experiencing PND as a result of; isolation, breakdown of relationships, physical and emotional abuse and issues from their childhood. Our group is also increasingly seeing women who have a history of anxiety, depression and other mental health conditions, which can make this time even harder for themselves and their family members who are supporting them.

Our peer support group is the core service we offer. We also provide 24-hour telephone support, social work, individualised goal-setting programme, in home support, movement workshops and in home visiting to our women. Trained professionals run our social work and goal setting services. These initiatives have helped women become well and provide support in the areas most crucial to a woman's recovery.

Well Women Franklin would like to continue to support women experiencing PND and other mental illness. Our services help women on their journey to becoming well again and empower them to take back their lives. Our group enables women to feel more confident to talk about their issues and have a better understanding of the fact that it is a medical condition, which can be treated and they can recover from.

Alignment with local board priorities:

·     Support communities and individuals within Papakura to achieve their goals and aspirations

Women are often the glue that holds the family together and when the women is unwell the family unit also becomes fragile. Through our Peer Support Groups the women learn how to identify issues, see the impact it may be having and support them in developing plans to address this, therefore building on their resilience.

Our aim is to engage with mothers before their situation reaches crisis point and support them on their journey to becoming well. Below is a testimonial from a women who attends our group.

"I have found the support of well woman fundamental in my recovery from postnatal anxiety and depression. Although I did have the support of my GP, midwife and maternity mental health referrals, you really only get a brief time with them and it can still feel quite isolated. The well woman phone service, free movement workshops, childcare, home help and sharing sessions really helped me have the chance to be heard, to heal fully, build confidence, accept and learn techniques to overcome difficulties. The support and knowledge I learnt on my journey with well woman, not only has helped me but in the future will help me guide my daughter and help her with any emotional issues. I also feel it has helped me form a really strong bond with my daughter. It is so important that we have this support for not only our health but the future health of our tamariki" - Emma

Community benefits

Identified community outcomes:

Carpentry play increases children’s control over their body encourages problem solving and communication skills. For adults supervising this play, it helps parents teach boundaries and encourages children to explore out of there comfort zones with parental help. This type learning is unique because of the safety aspect and not having it available in open settings, grandparents and extended families that come can get involved with play and build relationships with their family that they won’t generally do at home.

Alignment with local board priorities:

·     Support communities and individuals within Papakura to achieve their goals and aspirations

Parents at our centre come with different aspirations and goals. Some of our parents goals are participating in there children’s learning, helping with behaviour and encouraging family relationships. Our centre has a community and family approach to early childhood learning. We offer all different sorts of activities for children, messy play, music, outdoor play, art and cooking. For our families that want to encourage learning with their tamariki, they use these activities to grow their children’s learning, we follow Te Whariki learning curriculum and our parents take their learning home and grow there children’s learning not only in playcentre but at home also. We have multiple generations that come nanas and grandads with their grandchildren and parents. Aunties with their nephews and nieces. We encourage all family to attend playcentre, this brings families closer together. We support parents with their children’s behaviour by offering free online and face-to-face education to help with learning and growing together.  We also have other parents on session that encourage and help parents who are struggling whether its grabbing them a cup of tea or supervising their children, while the parent has some adult time to make friendships or discuss any issues they are having without any judgment.

Demographics

Māori outcomes:

Māori involvement in the design/concept, Māori focus - tikanga (practices), mātauranga (knowledge), reo (language), Māori participation - Māori priority group, target group, high representation or Māori staff delivering

Currently in this carpentry area, we have labelled our equipment in Maori to encourage our Maori families to speak Te reo. Our centre is bicultural and most of our equipment is labelled English and Maori. When this area is updated, we will still use Maori worded labels. We have grandparents come to the centre and participate with the tamariki. We love their knowledge being brought down through our generations. Grandads in particular enjoy teaching the tamariki how to build things. A few activities  that we are in the process of getting organized is someone in the community once the area is finish to make a mana aute or a titi torea.

Accessible to people with disabilities

Yes- We have 2 children who attend the centre who have long lasting disabilities. This project will be accessible to these members by having the location of the caprentry area, there is a big enough space to fit a wheelchair. The table will also be at wheelchair height so they can comfortably use it without much change. There are ear muffs for the other child who has autism to be able to use the carpentry area without feeling discomfort from the noise.

Target ethnic groups:

All/everyone

Summary:

We are requesting $5,000 as a contribution to the annual cost of $234,000for face-to-face counselling for vulnerable youth in the Puketapapa area who receive support from our counselling and youth worker teams and for Support Centre services.
Many of the young people we work with require face-to-face counselling and mentoring.
The Support Centre Centre is the first point of contact for many of the young people we work with and provides an essential link between the client and our counsellors. Last year we supported an estimated 1,428 young people from the Papakura area with development programmes, mentoring and counselling.

Expertise:

Youthline has been supporting young people in need for over 50 years and we have serious expertise in providing this support.
We have built up considerable knowledge and experience over this period such that we are recognised as the premier support service for young people in need. Our 200 Helpline volunteer counsellors receive intensive training and close supervision.
Colmar Brunton research (2021) shows that over 76% of young people in New Zealand are aware of Youthline. Last year we managed over 147,000 contacts to our helpline and worked with 16,432 000 individual young people.

Promotion:

The Youthline Helpline and Youth Worker and Counselling services are promoted and marketed across a wide range of media including the Youthline website, Facebook page, other social media and various promotional activities including Youth Week and the Youthline Annual Street Appeal. We have an extensive communications contact plan in place.
We will publicly acknowledge the local board’s contribution in the Youthline Annual Report, on our website, in social media and on our promotional material.

Community benefits

Identified community outcomes:

Many of the young people we work with are disadvantaged and often feel lonely, alone, disengaged and desperate with a reduced sense of belonging to family, school or community. Many often don’t have the economic means to house, feed and clothe themselves. Many have serious health issues.
Our youth workers and counsellors work with these young people to resolve their issues and support them as they transition to adulthood.
Adolescence can be a stressful time and having a responsible mentor/counsellor walking beside them can have a significant positive impact on a young person who is struggling to cope with the stresses and strains of daily life.
Now, 15 months after the first lockdown, the stress and anxiety that young people felt as a result of COVID-19 remains for many as an underlying condition and will require great care as we work with our rangatahi going forward.
The counselling and programmes, coordinated by our Support Centre, that we offer these vulnerable young people provide support, guidance, direction and motivation. These development opportunities encourage them to become positive contributors and leaders in their community – a real benefit to themselves, friends, whanau and the community at large.

Alignment with local board priorities:

·     Support communities and individuals within Papakura to achieve their goals and aspirations

Youthline is well known as “the number one place for young people to reach out to for support” with 17% of young people contacting us for support. 76% of young people are aware of Youthline alone (Colmar Brunton 2021). We have been supporting young people and working with communities for over 50 years. We are a “with youth, for youth” organisation and the first point of contact for many young people accessing youth development and support services across Aotearoa New Zealand. We are a respected and trusted frontline service that has changed the lives of many people who have reached out in their time of need.
The Youthline Helpline is at the heart of our mahi. Young people in need who contact us  through our Helpline often feel lonely, alone, disengaged and desperate. They often have a reduced sense of belonging to family, school or community.
We aim to ensure that the young people we work with have clear pathways from school to work. And we aim to engender a sense of belonging to their family, school and the community in which they live. In supporting these young people Youthline is very much committed to promoting healthy, safe, sustainable and active lifestyles.
COVID-19 has had a profound affect on the youth of Aotearoa. There has never been a more important time to create a sense of belonging, connection and community.
The pandemic has increased the demand for our services to a significant degree and placed additional pressure on our already stretched resources.
Further, just as the pandemic itself has been described as having a long tail, we know from research and experience that the pandemic will have a long mental health tail and the ongoing need for counselling services will also have long tail. And while going down levels represents a reduction in restrictions, the negative economic and social conditions of the pandemic will impact for the foreseeable future.
In a 2020 Youthline online survey with 975 young people and their families, more than 72% of respondents shared that COVID-19 and lockdown have impacted their mental health with young people under 25 more likely to share this than older groups.
Youthline supports these young people, acknowledges their issues and is inclusive with a strengths-based, person-centred approach. We very much aim to build engagement and resiliency for young people and and support them in transitioning to adulthood.
Youthline services equip youth with skills and insights on how to build self-esteem and improve mental-health, how to actively problem-solve, recover from setbacks and build resilience. Counsellors link them with local support services to assist their ongoing development. Through their improved emotional and self-management skills young people are less likely to fall into helplessness, depression, addictive behaviours, dangerous relationships and unemployment.
Our experienced youth worker teams provide individual support, mentoring, development and leadership opportunities to vulnerable youth throughout the Auckland region.
For many, connecting with Youthline provides a pathway to a range of personal development and life skills programmes offered by our team including personal development, job skills (e.g. barista training, CV writing and job applications) and learner licence training. All designed to better equip young people to be healthy and active and productive members of their communities.
Research shows that when young people are engaged in community activities, linked with whanau, and given the opportunity to participate feel that they are part of something and encouraged to reach their potential, that risk taking behaviour is reduced.  Youthline works inclusively with youth, from those young people who are most vulnerable to youth leaders who are championing change.
Our clinical support workers counsel/mentor young people identified as needing one-on-one support to encourage and inspire them.  They aim to understand the strengths and weaknesses of each young person, then identify goals and milestones and develop a plan for successful implementation and progression. By walking beside a young person and providing positive role models Youthline aims to see every young person become a positive contributor to society with a strong sense of belonging.
In terms of our services going forward we know that:
1.  There will continue to be a high demand for support coloured by the impact of COVID-19.
2.  We will need to maintain volunteer numbers at as higher a level as possible to cope  with the demand and increased complexity
3.  The need for comprehensive training and triage support for our volunteers will be paramount
4.   Our youth worker teams will continue to have a large number of vulnerable young people to work with requiring significant levels of programme resources.
5.  Our volunteer and face-to-face counsellors will have a high need for supervision that in particular acknowledges the unique stresses and strains engendered by the pandemic

Demographics

Māori outcomes:

Māori participation - Māori priority group, target group, high representation or Māori staff delivering

Youthline provides support services to young people in need across the ethnic spectrum. In our last reporting period 16% of calls and texts to our Helpline presented as Māori, slightly ahead of the 14% of young people aged 15-24 residing in the Auckland area who identify as Māori. For mentoring and counselling, 15% of young people identify as Māori.

All of our staff and volunteers are trained on the Treaty of Waitangi. Māori models of health such as Te Whare Tapa Wha inform our work with targets groups of rangatahi Māori. Youthline has a Māori working group (Nga Whetu Poutama) to guide Youthline to increase the organisation’s cultural capacity and inform the work that we do.

Healthy environment approach:

Promote smoke-free messages

Youthline Auckland supports the Auckland Council’s Smokefree Policy and its commitment to working proactively with others towards making Auckland smokefree by 2025.  We have a smoke free policy in place and can offer support, advice and referrals to young people who wish to give up smoking. We ensure that the young people we work with are aware of our support for making Auckland smokefree and how we can help them if necessary.

Financial information

Amount requested:

$5000.00

Requesting grant for:

We are requesting $5,000 as a contribution to the annual cost of $234,000 for counselling for vulnerable youth in the Papakura and for the Youthline Support Centre.
Many of the young people we work with require face-to-face counselling.
The Support Centre Centre is the first point of contact for many of the young people we work with and provides an essential link between our clients and our counsellors.

If part funded, how would you make up the difference:

We would not amend our plan as such. Rather we would continue being extremely proactive in applying for funding from a wide range of funders. We need to find the funding somewhere.
Under COVID many of our funders have a reduced capacity to provide funding. At a time when young people need our service more than ever we are hugely dependent on those organisations who can provide funding.

Additional information to support the application:

We are very appreciative of the previous support of the local board and would be very grateful if the board was able to contribute this time round to the cost of counselling for the young people we work with and our essential Support Centre services.
15 months after the first lockdown, the stress and anxiety that young people felt from COVID-19 remains for many as an underlying condition and will require great care as we work with our rangatahi going forward. We expect the need for our services will continue at this heightened level.

Project: The Creators Plug - Extended Edition

Location:

Redhill Community Centre, 163 Dominion Road, Papakura

Summary:

The Creators Plug is an interactive creative market that encourages attendees to participate in and be entertained by Street Art. A bonus element is that local artists can make money by selling their work. This can be in the form of food crafts, digital design or merchandise.

Expertise:

The idea for The Creators Plug was birthed during lockdown in 2020, as a way to give back to local artists and entrepreneurs in South Auckland. The team that pulled it together was blessed with a free venue and everyone worked voluntarily. The success of the event meant that we gained a lot of great feedback and encouragement to bring it to life again. Since, I have also become the event coordinator for a similar event called Unfold, run under Curative NZ. We are currently working on our 4th in-person arts activation.

Everyone involved has been selected according to their experience and skill in their chosen field, and for their love for the arts community.

Promotion:

Our creative director will create content that we will promote on the social media platforms instagram and facebook, and our own website once it goes live. We can incorporate logos and stipulate a partnership/collaboration with The Papakura Local Board, as well as tag the relevant pages in the posts. We will also encourage artists involved to do the same to acknowledge the support of our project.

Community benefits

Identified community outcomes:

Creatives of the Papakura Community can choose to engage in arts activities and will also be entertained by live street art on the day. The event is alcohol and drug free, allowing the space to be a safe environment for all ages to attend. The event is intended to cross-pollinate with as many local artists as possible and allow access and exposure to multi-disciplinary street art forms.

Alignment with local board priorities:

·     Support the arts and local cultural experiences in Papakura

Kia Ora, my name is Jasmine Day and I am Tangata Whenua of Āotearoa, born and raised in Papakura.

I come from a large, low economic whānau who whakapapa to Ngāpuhi and Ngāti Hāua. I am a passionate creative who dabbles in many arts practises; dance, poetry, music, and digital design to name a few. I'm always looking for ways to grow as a creative, and love to turn ideas into opportunities for the people around me. This has resulted in a few successful events that were merely ideas sparked at 3am, while breastfeeding my newborn. I discovered I thoroughly enjoy community arts events, both attending and facilitating them. Sitting in these thoughts through a worldwide pandemic, knowing creatives were longing for community and creativity, is how The Creators Plug came about. I had an idea to gather creatives in my community who showed they were hungry to create and connect again, and we put on a successful event for the street arts community in Tāmaki Makaurau.

The first event was completely out-of-pocket. The entire event crew were kind enough to offer their services free-of-charge. We all knew it was a bigger picture kind of event that would birth something beautiful. Originally, we wanted it to be a free event, making it accessible for all economic backgrounds. The 312 Hub had offered the venue for free even though they were struggling post-covid, so we decided at the last minute to charge $5 per adult and $2 per child as a koha to The Hub to aid in their recovery. We managed to raise $550 to donate to their boosted campaign, which hopefully shows the morals and ethics of the event and our crew.

We had creatives in the music studio all day, 26 street dancers compete in a battle The Projekt Team facilitated, 9 creative entrepreneurs selling their art, a tattooist from The Native Studios(Tonez), chalk art outside and dancers on the catwalk. It did more than exceed our expectations, and I've been approached many times by artists to bring it back for a second round. Using the skills I have picked up from personal events, and my experience working as an event coordinator for Curative NZ, I am adamant I have the connections and competence to successfully produce this event again.

My idea for The Creators Plug - Extended Edition is to bring together the street art community so that young New Zealand creatives can experience meaningful connections, participate in arts activities, or be selected to sell their work in the form of merchandise, digital design and creative foods. I believe that by creating this space, artists in Papakura can benefit by meeting collaborators, making potential clientele, creating new works, and utilising the arts as a healing tool. The Creators Plug is an alcohol and drug-free event, and includes an element of dance and recreational sport. This is to encourage healthy lifestyle choices for young people across Āotearoa, and to provide a positive arts experience for all ages.

The project can ensure creatives are participating in the arts by hiring 27+ young creatives to facilitate stations, so that event guests have the guidance to express themselves creatively. These activations will include but aren't limited to; an arts and crafts station, photography creation, modelling, digital design, music production, poetry, and dance. We will encourage artists to participate by promoting the event on social media, and asking our creative communities to share on their platforms. We hope to get as many creatives as possible to engage in the arts through The Creators Plug and hopefully, for a long time after. Creating a space like this can inspire under-served communities to pursue, and/or continue their individual arts journey just by showing them what's available to them. Both in the form of creative peoples and resources.

The Creators Plug is able to sustain careers for artists by providing space for guests to develop their arts skills. We have made up a team of 28 artists(including myself) who will facilitate activations, 27 of which, are being paid. As a bonus, artists who help facilitate will be able to add event experience to their portfolios. Hiring a local venue who already supports and provides for artists will enable them to continue giving back to the arts community. We will offer artists a chance to feature as a stall holder, enabling them to collect revenue and future clientele. Anything produced on the day by creatives can be taken home and used in future works/galleries/portfolios, or to generate income. We will also offer guidance in legitimising this process through HNRY.co.nz. Anything that can't be taken home will be offered to the community through a google drive folder after the event. The Creators Plug is free of charge to enter, removing barriers to access for audiences and artists in Papakura.

The Creators Plug is 100% Māori Led. South Siders Collective is made up of 4 passionate, Māori creatives who share the same vision. For this event, we will collaborate with majority Māori or Pasifika artists in South Auckland. This is to give back to communities who are often overlooked in the industry, but are just as worthy of these opportunities. We hope to see more of our brown faces, thrive - and this is one way to do our part in creating that change. We will honour Kaupapa Māori by opening and closing in karakia, blessing our food before we eat and ensuring guests leave feeling part of The Creators Plug whānau.

Project: Enhanced Waste Minimisation Advisory Service

Location:

Sustainable Papakura Base, 4/2 Averill St, Papakura

Summary:

To increase opening hours to include weekends and more regular weekday hours than we can currently offer. This will be done through  upskilling selected volunteers to become Waste Minimisation Advisors to keep our Base open on a rostered basis.

Expertise:

This is our bread and butter! Over the last 4 years Sustainable Papakura members have developed skills to successfully engage people in discussion about their attitudes to waste minimisation and sustainability, and in taking first steps on this journey. We have also found that people return for  'top up' information when presented with new challenges suggesting that hey find us approachable and relevant.

Community benefits

Identified community outcomes:

Papakura Residents will have certainty about Sustainable Papakura's Opening Hours and be able to access the Base to get information and support, and to drop off hard to recycle items. The Base will also be open reliably outside normal work hours.
People will have a sense of connectedness to others on the Sustainable Living journey and will have a place where they can seek support and community. They will also be able to contribute to wider action on climate change reversal through our various projects which gives people an outlet for anxieties about the future through the ability to take concrete action.

Alignment with local board priorities:

·     Support successful programmes to help people reduce, reuse and recycle

Our project aims to give  Papakura residents improved access to information and support about reducing, reusing, repurposing and recycling that is relevant and tailored to their particular situation and needs. Knowledge about what is recyclable and reuseable helps people to reduce waste, Our Base offers  a physical space and contact with a community which facilitates re-use and repurposing. Education helps people to recycle correctly  using council services, and our collection services allow them to divert hard to recycle items. We want to offer this service over extended hours to make it available at times when families are out and about. Through 1:1 discussion and hands on assessment of their waste production we can assist people to problem solve barriers they face in engaging in these activities. Making the  fundamental lifestyle changes required to  significantly 'reduce reuse and recycle' waste is complex and difficult for most of us. A friendly discussion with peers is much more supportive and individualised than reading a leaflet. While language and literacy are serious barriers for many, most people find making this lifestyle change confusing and without support it becomes too hard.
When people who come in find that they are contaminating the recycling they put out, this is discouraging and distressing when they  have been trying to do their best. We nee to engage sensitively and supportively with them to encourage 'recycling right', and lifestyle changes.

Collaborating organisation/individual

Role

Through our networks, and especially through Papakura Community Network, we can support others to start their own collections, or feed into ours.

Promotion, leadership, collection and redistribution of reuseables and recyclables

Demographics

Māori outcomes:

Māori focus - tikanga (practices), mātauranga (knowledge), reo (language)

Our activities all encourage enquiry into Maori concepts and practices, and highlight the importance of kaitiakitanga of our natural environment for the well being of Papatuanuku and all who are supported by her. We emphasise the importance of holistic understandings in the interests of wellbeing for all. We are very keen to offer any support we can to Maori led or targeted programmes. However we also believe that such is the seriousness of the situation climate change is creating, that we all need to work together for maximum impact, to maximise leadership opportunities that will lead towards reversal.

Accessible to people with disabilities

Yes- Our current site is accessible.

Target ethnic groups:

All/everyone

Healthy environment approach:

Promote smoke-free messages, Include waste minimisation (zero waste) messages, Healthy options for food and drink, including water as the first choice, Encouraging active lifestyles including movement or fitness programmes, Encourage the reduction of carbon emissions or increase community resilience to the impacts of climate change*

Smoke free- Display smoke-free messages , maintain a smoke free display, engage openly with people about the damage of smoking to people and to their environment
Zero Waste Messages- our site is a hub for these messages and we want to make it available to more people
All our events include hospitality based on water as a first choice and provision of healthy food with an emphasis on low environmental impact foods, growing and making your own, sharing recipes, avoiding waste. Our logo promotes the importance of clean water.
Because our workshops encourage people to make rather than purchase as much as possible, they are intrinsically encouraging people to be more active and
Highlighting use of public transport, cycling and walking to reduce emissions, stay healthy and to recognise the actions each can take to wards reversing climate change.

Project: Victim Support’s volunteer programme in the Papakura Local Board area

Location:

64 Wood Street, Papakura

Summary:

Our local volunteer programme includes recruiting, training, reimbursement, and supervision (by Service Co-ordinator Lailoa Su'a). Our (mostly volunteer) frontline support workers assist people affected by crime, trauma, and sudden death. Lailoa’s strong skills enable our volunteers to deliver professional support, helping victims through their most vulnerable times. Our local costs include: Service Coordinator salary and volunteer supervision; awareness and volunteer recruitment advertising and information; mandatory training (and specialist training covering topics such as homicide, suicide, sexual violence, and/or family violence and harm); and mileage (which can be significant especially as, by travelling to see people face-to-face, we can provide more meaningful support, increase privacy, dignity, and accessibility, and reduce social isolation at a time of vulnerability).

Expertise:

Victim Support is NZ's leading agency helping victims of crime and trauma. We are the first port of call for victims, frontline police, and other agencies during a crisis or incident. Our work is recognised as an essential service by the Government and the New Zealand Police. We work closely with Police (and are based at their local stations). However, we are a completely independent charity that also works with a wide range of government and community agencies (such as the Age Concern, Department of Corrections, Oranga Tamariki, Skylight, and Women's Refuge) to provide victims with the health and social support services they need. Our network of caring and skilled people provides support 24/7 in every local community in NZ.

Victim Support would acknowledge the kind support of the Papakura Local Board on our website and in our Annual Report, as well as in other publications or platforms as appropriate (eg in newsletters and social media). We would also welcome the opportunity to provide you with Victim Support stories and/or photographs (as appropriate and bearing in mind the privacy of the people we assist and the sensitivity of the incidents we are involved in).

Community benefits

Identified community outcomes:

We provide immediate and ongoing practical support and advice to people affected by crime and trauma (and those who have lost a loved one in a motor vehicle or workplace accident, from a medical event or from a homicide or suicide). We visit people in their home, at the police station, at the scene of an incident, and we provide support over the phone. Our service is freely available 24/7. In the past year, we assisted 18,748 victims within Auckland Council’s boundaries. 38% were in Auckland, 14% in Waitematā, and 48% in Counties Manukau. Over 7,000 people (38% of all local victims) were affected by family violence and harm – while 2,496 people (13.5%) were affected by assault, and 2,411 (13%) by robbery or burglary. Over 3,500 people (20%) were affected by the sudden death of a loved one. This included 624 people affected by homicide, 968 people affected by suicide, 370 people affected by a fatal motor vehicle accident, and 1,491 people affected by a sudden, fatal medical event – ranging from parents suffering from the cot death of a baby through to others traumatised at discovering a deceased family member, friend, neighbour, or stranger, or witnessing their death.

Alignment with local board priorities:

·     Support communities and individuals within Papakura to achieve their goals and aspirations

Lailoa Su'a is our local Victim Support Service Co-ordinator. She has a team that works out of the Papakura Police Station and covers areas such as Drury, Pahurehure, Papakura, Red Hill, and Takanini. She ensures our local (mostly volunteer) support workers are trained and continually supported and debriefed. As demand for our services continues to increase, it is crucial that we constantly recruit and train strong intakes of new volunteers (and that we refresh and upgrade the skills of our current people). This enables Victim Support to contribute to social wellbeing and to resilient, safe, connected, supported, and supportive communities in the Papakura Local Board area – with local staff and volunteers assisting their communities by providing immediate practical support and advice to confront the many unexpected challenges and difficult processes that can occur after a serious incident. We provide independent support to deal with the police and the courts, including assisting with victim impact statements and supporting a person or family through a trial, inquest, or restorative justice or family group conference. Our support is freely available to all victims irrespective of their income, location, gender, sexuality, religion, or ethnic or cultural background. Long-term social costs of harm are reduced – our local support workers help identify and address the risks of poor mental health, repeat harm, self-harm, and violence. We travel to see people face-to-face. That way, we can provide more meaningful support, increase privacy and dignity (and reduce social isolation) at a time of vulnerability, and improve accessibility especially for people without affordable transport, older people, and people with health issues or disabilities. Older (or younger) people living alone, migrants, and those with little family or other support can access impartial, confidential, non-judgemental, and accurate information or advice. Crime, trauma, and sudden death can strike without warning, to anyone, anywhere, anytime. When it does, Lailoa and our local frontline team are there in times of crisis and beyond, to support victims, family, friends, whanāu, first responders, and witnesses. Victim Support assists and empowers local people to be safe, heal, find justice, and participate at every step of their journey. We normally assist people many times after a crime, trauma, or sudden death (for example, up to, during, and after a court or coronial process). Your support helps to ensure that our assistance remains free, available 24/7 for 365 days of the year, and lasts for as long as local people need it.

$5000.00

Requesting grant for:

We are seeking a contribution towards Victim Support’s volunteer programme in the Papakura Local Board area (including recruiting, training, reimbursement, and supervision provided by our local Service Co-ordinator Lailoa Su'a).

If part funded, how would you make up the difference:

To meet the shortfall, we rely on national and regional fundraising (including donations, sponsorship, and bequests), and on the kind support of funders such as the Auckland Council’s Papakura Local Board. We are continually seeking community support to ensure our service remains free and available 24/7. (Please note: Our audited accounts are significantly skewed by a grants programme (called the Victim Assistance Scheme) which involves funds annually held and distributed directly to victims of crime. We operate this on behalf of the Ministry of Justice. This funding shows as income but it is not operational funding for Victim Support.)

Cost of participation:

Our support is provided free of charge 24/7 365 days of the year and lasts for as long as people need it.

Additional information to support the application:

In the past year, we assisted 18,748 people within Auckland Council’s boundaries (38% in Auckland; 14% in Waitematā; and 48% in Counties Manukau). The amount we are seeking from your board approximately reflects the percentage of local people assisted in your area (ie 38% is requested from four local boards in Auckland; 14% from two local boards in Waitematā; and 48% from three local boards in Counties Manukau). This works out at $2.32 per person we assist within local boundaries, whether we help that person once or (as is usually the case) numerous times over many months (or even years).

Through our partnership with Para Kore Ki Tāmaki this part of the programme is Māori led and provides a Te Ao Māori perspective on minimising waste.

Karakia are always spoken prior to our activities and mana whenua are invited to korero.

Additional information to support the application:

EMR has a fantastic track record of providing school programmes and community events around Tāmaki Makaurau. Our events provide an opportunity for collaboration and engagement between local groups and their communities.

We loved running the Papakura Paddle last summer and we would appreciate the support of the Papakura Local Board to run it again - scaled up to maximise community engagement. Last summer due to COVID lockdowns it didn't reach it's full potential.

See attached below for our list of events from last season - An invitation to local board members to participate in these events will be sent.
