|
Identified community outcomes: |
|
|
The community benefits from our event would see a strong engagement with our badminton community, especially the our Asian community. We would be able to engage with and deliver an event that would see the inclusion for all badminton enthusiasts and people that enjoy international sport. Our accommodation and vehicle providers would benefit from our event, with our players, volunteers and some supporters staying in the tournament hotel, while rental vehicles would be used to provide transport to and from the hotel and playing venue. We would also look to involve our local schools by inviting the children to come and watch International level badminton in their own back yard. What an opportunity that would be for them. |
Alignment with local board priorities: |
|
|
Sport and recreation Being able to host an International sporting event is a highlight for any sports organisation. Showcasing our organisation to International badminton players and supporters while delivering an event that our community can participate in and be a part of is very important. Our sport, our city and our region can be showcased and promoted locally and around the world with the assistance of live streaming. Our members are very supportive of our badminton events/tournaments and volunteer to help where they can, becoming line judges, drivers, administration support, umpires and helping with general duties needed to deliver a successful International event. |

For many of the young people we work with the first contact point
with us is through the Helpline and our volunteer counsellors. Many of the
young people are vulnerable – disadvantaged, disillusioned, disengaged
- and their situation is exacerbated under COVID-19. |
Alignment with local board priorities: |
|
|
Youth
Youthline has been supporting rangatahi and their families for over
50 years. Our kaupapa/purpose is to strengthen wellbeing through youth voice
and youth choice such that young people are empowered within their
communities. |

Māori participation - Māori priority group, target group, high representation or Māori staff delivering Youthline provides support services to young people in need across
the ethnic spectrum. In our last reporting period 16% of calls and texts to
our Helpline presented as Māori, slightly ahead of the 14% of young
people aged 15-24 residing in the Auckland area who identify as Māori.
For mentoring and counselling, 15% of young people identify as
Māori. |
Accessible to people with disabilities |
Yes - All our services and facilities are accessible to people with disabilities. |
Target ethnic groups: |

Healthy environment approach: |
Promote smoke-free messages Youthline Auckland supports the Auckland Council’s Smokefree Policy and its commitment to working proactively with others towards making Auckland smokefree by 2025. We have a smoke free policy in place and can offer support, advice and referrals to young people who wish to give up smoking. We ensure that the young people we work with are aware of our support for making Auckland smokefree and how we can help them if necessary. |

extremely proactive in applying for funding from a wide range of funders. The
total cost of the Youthline Helpline will be $1.5m this year. We receive
funding of $90,000 from an Oranga Tamariki contract meaning we have to
fundraise over $1.4m each and every year. |

We are very appreciative of the previous support of the local board and would be very grateful if the board was able to contribute this time round to the cost of providing clinical support for our essential volunteer Helpline counsellors who, under COVID-19, are supporting a record number of young people experiencing mental distress and hardship of an unprecedented nature. As an essential service it is vital that we are able to keep the Helpline fully operational. The training, supporting, supervising and management of our volunteer counsellors is an absolute priority. |

Project: The gift of speech for Anson, Annabel, and Lily Mae |
||||
Location: |
Various homes and schools throughout the Upper Harbour region |
|||
Summary: |
This project will support children with Down syndrome in the Upper Harbour Local Board area to access life-altering speech and language therapy. Anson, Annabel, and Lily Mae are 100% of Upper Harbour’s population of children with Down syndrome engaged with Upside Downs; they will be provided with regular individualised speech and language therapy, which is desperately needed to dramatically improve their ability to speak, read, write, form relationships with peers, and engage with their community in order to improve their chances of good health, employment, and independence later in life. The children and their families will work with NZSTA-registered speech-language therapists, who will support them to achieve a range of age-appropriate developmental targets throughout the year. |

Community benefits |
|
Identified community outcomes: |
|
|
Speech and language therapy helps to significantly reduce barriers
between children with Down syndrome and their peers, families, and
communities. In return, these relationships have shown to improve the
emotional intelligence of typically developing students and the mental and
physical health outcomes of young people with Down syndrome. Inclusive
communities are healthy, vibrant, and connected communities that benefit from
the contributions that people with Down syndrome bring to their schools,
workplaces, and the places they live. However, if children cannot
communicate, the barriers to inclusion and engagement are immense. |
Alignment with local board priorities: |
|
|
Youth UpsideDowns helps to support children and young people with Down
syndrome by covering the cost of life-changing speech and language therapy.
Speech and language therapy is an essential intervention for children with
Down syndrome but is not covered by the Ministry of Education, and the cost
of private therapy is often too great for families to afford. Today we are
applying for funding on behalf of three children in the Upper Harbour Local
Board area; Anson, Annabel, and Lily Mae. Annabel and Lily Mae are both teens
attending school in the Upper Harbour region and Anson is beginning his
learning journey in early childhood education. These young people have so
much to contribute and if properly supported will have the opportunity to
become fully connected with their community, fostering personal resilience
and allowing them to live healthy, active lives. |

Accessible to people with disabilities |
Yes - We work exclusively with children with the life-long disability of Down syndrome. Down syndrome is the most common chromosomal condition in the world and results in an intellectual disability and physiological abnormalities, such as a larger-than-average tongue, a smaller-than-average mouth, and lower muscle tone. All of these factors combine to significantly impair the individual's ability to speak. UpsideDowns recognises that people with disabilities play a major role in our communities and are often supported by a network of people around them. By improving their communication skills, we can build their network and increase their impact on their communities in a positive way. |
Target ethnic groups: |
All/everyone |
Healthy environment approach: |
Promote smoke-free messages, Include waste minimisation (zero waste) messages, Healthy options for food and drink, including water as the first choice We work with children, so we are 100% smoke-free. We endeavour to be a zero-waste organisation by operating paperlessly and striving to use sustainable materials in all our events and fundraisers. |

Requesting grant for: |
The subsidising of speech and language therapy for Anson, Annabel, and Lily Mae for one year. |
If part funded, how would you make up the difference: UpsideDowns commits to assisting children and their families from the time they come off our waitlist until they choose to resign, the child turns 21, or they graduate high school. If this project is unsuccessful, we will draw from our cash reserves. If these reserves become too depleted we will have to reduce the number of sessions we can support or decrease our funding cap. This will further hinder each child's ability to participate in, celebrate, and contribute to the community, decreasing the range of opportunities available to them in the long term. |

Project: Core Fitness Training for youth athletes |
||||
Location: |
Glenfield Pool and Leisure Centre during our allocated training times |
|||
Summary: |
Our project will provide an opportunity for our athletes to train with a professional in the field. This will increase motivation and strength for our athletes in a safe environment. Synchronised swimming is a challenging sport and this will provide support for the athletes to participate in a well rounded training program. |

|
Our youth community will benefit from this opportunity by increasing
their motivation during training, increasing their fitness level, and
creating a sense of pride for their accomplishments. |
Alignment with local board priorities: |
|
|
Sport and recreation
Our project supports sport and recreation by offering our athletes an opportunity to increase their fitness outside the pool to help improve their performance while in the pool. Our program offers a wide variety of fitness opportunities (stretching, fitness, endurance, strength), but we find that we are lacking in providing the core fitness that is essential for performing synchronised swimming routines in the pool. We would like to provide core strength sessions by a certified expert to reduce the risk of injury and create a more well rounded program for our athletes. |
