Resolution number WTK/2023/150 MOVED by Chairperson G Presland, seconded by Deputy Chairperson M Clayton: That the Waitākere Ranges Local Board: a) whakamihi /acknowledge the passing of Bobbie Carroll who passed away recently after a long battle with blood cancer. A Piha resident for over 20 years she became known for her passionate advocacy for the area, its people and especially the environment. Often seen weeding her beloved Beach Valley road and coaxing neighbours into becoming involved. In recent years she bravely took on the battle for voluntary euthanasia speaking publicly for the Act Party’s End of Life Choice Bill before it came into force in 2021. In February even while gravely ill Bobbie campaigned for cancer drugs sent by courier to patients to be labelled as urgent medical supplies so they were given high importance. She was often outspoken, fearless, not afraid to ask questions and throw down a challenge when she felt it was needed. A recent description of her “Bobbie was definitely never one to hold back on matters that were important to her but she did everything with love.” She will be missed by her family, her friends, her community and her beloved Julia. |

Resolution number WTK/2023/151 MOVED by Chairperson G Presland, seconded by Deputy Chairperson M Clayton: That the Waitākere Ranges Local Board: a) whakamihi /acknowledge the passing of Elizabeth Francke, known to everyone as Liz, who was a prominent member of the conservation movement out West and also served a number of terms as a member of the New Lynn Community Board as well as one term as its chair. She was one of the first contributors to the development of the EcoCity concept and was fiercely protective of the local environment. For many years she promoted the growing of fruit and nut trees in parks and on road berms. Her contributions to Waitākere include establishing Trees for Babies and Parent Aid Waitākere, and she was an active member of Ecomatters Trust, the Keep Waitākere Beautiful Trust, the Weed Free Waitākere Trust, a life member of Keep New Zealand Beautiful, and secretary to the Titirangi Community House management committee. Her dedication to the environment included her advocating and championing the concept of ecoburials at Waikumete Cemetery and the first ecoburials in New Zealand occurred there. Her daughter Lucy has advised that Liz is working on her last environmental task, and that is of turning herself into a tree at the Avenue of Remembrance. Her tree is to be planted next year. |

Resolution number WTK/2023/152 MOVED by Chairperson G Presland, seconded by Deputy Chairperson M Clayton: That the Waitākere Ranges Local Board: a) whakamihi /acknowledge the exceptional contributions to the local board area made by Leanne Appleby, the esteemed manager of Glen Eden Community House. After an illustrious career spanning two decades, Leanne has recently announced her retirement. Under Leanne's dedicated leadership, the Glen Eden Community House has experienced remarkable progress, becoming a cornerstone of the local community, and extending support to other community houses as well. Leanne's influence extends beyond Glen Eden Community House, as evidenced by her significant roles in various organisations. She served as an administrator with Community Waitākere, the Treasurer of Whau Ace, Parent Aid (for 15 years), Friends of Waikumete, and Greater Glen Eden. Her financial acumen and unwavering dedication have played a pivotal role in the success of these organisations. Beyond her formal roles, Leanne has actively participated in other community groups, including Glen Eden Pataka and Whanau Kai, always willing to contribute and make a positive impact. Leanne's departure to Tauranga marks the end of an era for the Waitākere community. Her absence will undoubtedly be felt, and the community will be all the poorer for her leaving. |
