Fuatino Melegalenuu To'alepaiali'i Ah Sam MNZM
Yesterday, Fuatino Melegalenuu To'alepaiali'i Ah Sam passed away at Middlemore Hospital. She was a well known figure in the South Auckland and Samoan community. She served as Deputy Principal and as Acting Principal of Māngere College, but she was also a Papatoetoe resident. She was also the PolyFest Samoa Stage Coordinator and will be remembered as one of the pioneers and unsung heroes of our ASB Polyfest Samoa Stage. Her significant contributions to Pacific language education were recognised in 2022 when she was appointed a Member of the New Zealand Order of Merit.

Kaea Conaan Mata’u
Last month, Kaea Conaan Mata’u passed away after being struck in a hit-and-run in Papatoetoe. Kaea was a Year 10 student at Papatoetoe High School. He was a loved friend amongst his school peers, and a promising athlete having played at local sports clubs like the Ōtara Scorpions.

Aorere College
Earlier in the month Temaeva Pirake and Tyler-James Finlay both competed at the Auckland Secondary Schools athletics championships. Congratulations to Temaeva Pirake, who placed 1st in Jnr Girls Javelin, and to Tyler-James Finlay who placed 2nd in Jnr Boys 80m Hurdles. Tyler-James Finlay went on to compete at the North Island Secondary Schools Athletics Championships in Palmerston North coming away with a gold medal for the Junior Boys 80m hurdles. Congratulations Tyler-James for an amazing achievement.
De La Salle College
At the Auckland Schools Waka Ama Senior Regatta held last month, De La Salle crews did well, winning the U16 Mixed WT 12 250m Championship, placing second in the U19 Novice W6 250m Championship race, placing third in the U16 Boys W6 500m Championship race, and second in the U16 Boys W6 250m Championship race.
At the Counties Manukau Athletics Championships, De La Salle also had success. Lucas Va’aga won the Intermediate Discus, with Kingston Pupuke-Robati coming in behind with second place. At shotput, the two swapped placing with Kingston winning the Intermediate Shotput, and Lucas placing second. At the Intermediate 200m sprints, De La Salle took out the top three spots with Cairo Wheeler winning the race, followed by Liam Fanolua, then Leroy Lauvao. In the senior 100m sprints, Mark Sikuvea won first place. In the 4x100m relay, De La Salle won both Intermediate and Senior races. James Lynch, Leroy Lauva, Liam Fanolua and Cairo Wheeler ran for the Intermediate team, whereas, Mark Sikuvea, Elijah Paea, Chisom Ochibulu and Rico Toeava-Ward made up the Senior team.
Debating
Papatoetoe High School Debate team emerged triumphant at the fiercely contested Counties Manukau Regionals 2024. Led by a synergy of diverse perspectives of Joel Challis, Jenny Vu and Han Nguyen, they showcased the art of persuasion with unwavering conviction. The senior team won all of their four motions and stood unwavering in their mastery of rhetoric and critical thinking.
Runners-Up - De La Salle College: Leato Collins, Marques Tominiko & Elijah Wilson. De La Salle students dominated the following awards. Most Promising Speaker: Marques Tominiko (De La Salle College). Promising Speakers: Steve Roberts (De La Salle College) and Elijah Wilson (De La Salle College). Highly Commended Speakers: included Iosefo Tominiko (De La Salle College).
PolyFest 2024
Samoan stage: Papatoetoe High School placed third out of the co-ed schools. Cook Islands stage: overall division 1, Sir Edmund Collegiate won first place. In division 2, Aorere College came first. Papatoetoe High School placed second in division 3. Niuean stage: Aorere College placed second amongst the co-ed schools.

Councillor Lotu Fuli was in attendance to provide a verbal Governing Body Member update on the Long-term Plan 2024-2034 consultation, Proposed restructure of the Local Boards, opening of Manukau Chambers, congratulated the board on the success of Polyfest and Lantern festival and acknowledged Bethsharon Mattocks Samoan speech at the Polyfest.

Director, Richard Smith and General Manager, Jessica Taylor of Rich Landscapes was in attendance to put forward a proposal to implement a few additional low cost features and tweaks at the Ōtara Skate Park project. They also discussed the Allenby Bowl upgrade and how just resurfacing will not revitalise this community asset and a more thorough redevelopment by specialists should be undertaken. |

Review of the allocation table recording the allocation of decision-making responsibility for non-regulatory activities |

Resolution number OP/2024/37 MOVED by Chairperson AR Autagavaia, seconded by Deputy Chairperson O Dewes, MNZM: That the Ōtara-Papatoetoe Local Board: a) tono/request that the principle of subsidiarity be applied in determining the allocation of decision-making responsibility for non-regulatory activities; b) tuhi ā-taipitopito / note that there are no substantive changes proposed to the allocation of decision-making for non-regulatory activities; c) tuhi ā-taipitopito / note that work is underway to consider whether, from a policy perspective, local boards should be able to make both the acquisition and disposal decision as part of land exchanges and this will be considered through the next annual review of the allocation table or through the local board delegation protocols, which are due to be reviewed later this year; d) tuhi ā-taipitopito / note that the updated process for decision-making of stormwater activities will be reviewed with local boards in six months’ time and any issues arising will be considered through the next annual review of the allocation table or through the local board delegation protocols, which are due to be reviewed later this year; e) tono / request that the Governing Body direct staff to investigate further whether, from a policy perspective, local boards should be able to make decisions on stormwater activities, or aspects of them. |
