Resolution number PPK/2024/131 MOVED by Chairperson B Catchpole, seconded by Member G Hawkins: That the Papakura Local Board: a) Taupiri te maunga Waikato te awa He piko he taniwha He piko he taniwha! Waikato taniwharau Taupiri is the mountain Waikato is the river At every bend a chief At every bend a chief Waikato of one hundred chiefs Haere atu ra to taatou Kiingi Tuuheitia Pootatau Te Wherowhero te tuawhitu Haere raa e te Aariki. Haere ki te Kaahui aariki ki te rangi. E tangi mamae ana te ngaakau, haere, haere , haere atu ra Great leader Tuheitia Pootatau Te Wherowhero the Seventh Depart dearest Aariki. Go to the Aariki in the heavens The heart is hurt with pain at your loss, go, go, go in peace Kiingi Tuuheitia carried his monumental responsibility and humility through New Zealand, to the Pacific Islands, to the Olympics, to the house of King Charles the Third. His compassion for his people was felt, his independent thinking was seen, and his restorative peaceful approach to major issues as seen in the organised hui aa motu call for “unity”. He delivered many inspiring quotes urging young people to embrace their identity with the message: "The best protest we can do right now is be Maaori. Be who we are, live our values, speak our reo, care for our mokopuna, our Awa, our Maunga, Just be Maaori. Maaori all day, every day. We are here, we are strong”. This powerful statement is now ingrained in the minds of many and widely shared across social media platforms. During the tangi we saw the threading of many communities and people come through Tuurangawaewae to pay their respects. Friends and colleagues from many corners of the earth came – shoemakers, carpenters, blacksmiths and bakers – across to rarely seen guests, experts, politicians across the spectrum and workers of communities and Iwi up and down the country personifying his call for unity. All of the Iwi within the Papakura Local board area have strong affiliation to Waikato Tainui and our thoughts and sympathies are with them at this time. Moe mai ra e te Aariki, Moe mai i te Rangimarie Rest great Aariki, Rest in peace.
