Resolution number WTK/2024/141 MOVED by Chairperson G Presland, seconded by Deputy Chairperson M Clayton: That the Waitākere Ranges Local Board: a) acknowledge the death of Judy Cooper. Judy was well known and respected for her help both locally and for Waitakere City. She was a Māori elder assigned to carry out formal Māori welcomes for a number of years at Waitakere City Council chambers. John Tamihere said about her: "Whaea Judy was the anchor for our best of times and our worst of times. She officiated at countless baptisms, weddings and Tangi. At all hui she brought a presence of aroha and understanding. Somehow she had a gift of making us all believe we were good and could get along, when wrong was done, forgiveness was always available." She was one of Pita Sharples' right hand ladies in terms of building Hoani Waititi Marae. She was an ordained minister and had blessed many babies of the marae and married many couples from Waititi over the years. She has been described as being sharp tongued and had a great wit but never spoke ill of anyone. She always put her hand out to support others. She will be sorely missed. |
