Resolution number MR/2024/185 MOVED by Chairperson M Winiata, seconded by Deputy Chairperson G Murphy: That the Manurewa Local Board: a) acknowledge Ms Anne Candy (Ngāiterangi, Waikato-Tainui), Manukau City Councillor from 1995 until 2010 and Deputy Mayor of Manukau from 1998 to 2007.
Ms Candy chaired the Manukau City Council’s Environmental Hearings Committee from 2007 to 2010 and was an elected member of the Counties Manukau District Health Board from 2008 to 2010. She has been a member of Manurewa Local Board since 2019.
She was a Review Panel member for the External Review of Maternity Care in the Counties Manukau District for the DHB in 2012. She has contributed in various ways to Ngati Te Ata, supporting parents and whānau in education, health, housing, te reo Māori, cultural heritage, the wellbeing of tamariki, and environmental protection. She was appointed by the Māori Women’s Welfare League as an inaugural Trustee of the Water Utility Consumer Assistance Trust in 2011. She co-founded in 2005 and has chaired the Taonga Education Centre Charitable Trust, helping establish the Potiki Early Childhood Centre and Parents Unit in 2006 and Te Kopu Inc’s Te Kahui Iti Nei Early Childhood Centre in 2008. She served as Bishop’s Commissary to Te Pihopa o Te Tai Tokerau from 2002 to 2023. Mrs Candy was patron of the Manurewa RSA from 1998 to 2018 and has been patron of the Manukau National Council of Women since 2002. One of her proudest achievements while serving as a councillor was being instrumental in the naming of Te Irirangi Drive and it has been her advocacy directly that has seen the Orange Sky bring their free washing facilities for the homeless to Manurewa. Notice of Motion - Chair Matt Winiata - Ban on the private sale and use of fireworks |

Resolution number MR/2024/195MOVED by Chairperson M Winiata, seconded by Member A Cunningham-Marino:That the Manurewa Local Board: a) acknowledge the community concern around the private sale and use of fireworks b) note the fire risk posed by fireworks and the impact this has on fire and emergency services (FENZ) c) note the negative impact that fireworks can have on pets and other animals d) note the risk of injury to people from fireworks e) note the significance of fireworks to cultural celebrations, including Diwali and Chinese New Year f) advocate to the Governing Body to: i) advocate to Central Government for a legislation change to ban the private sale and use of fireworks of classifications 1.3G (UN 0335), 1.4G (UN 0336), and 1.4S (UN 0337) ii) ban the private sale of fireworks from council land, including on parks, reserves and road berms iii) implement a requirement for permits for any public fireworks display iv) continue to enable public firework displays in safe and controlled environments, including for cultural celebrations and festivals throughout the year.

Resolution number MR/2024/196 MOVED by Chairperson M Winiata, seconded by Member R McLean: That the Manurewa Local Board: a) provide feedback the following to be considered for incorporation into, and appending to, Auckland Council’s submission to the Justice Select Committee on the Principles of the Treaty of Waitangi Bill i) endorse Auckland Council's commitment to Te Tiriti o Waitangi and the commitment to continuing to partner with Māori ii) note that the local board remains committed to working with Māori and upholding its obligations under Te Tiriti o Waitangi, including through the initiatives outlined in the 2023 Manurewa Local Board Plan iii) recognise that Māori also continue to uphold their role as kaitiaki of Aotearoa as a direct expression of their tino rangatiratanga, and this should always be recognised iv) note that Manurewa has the highest proportion and highest number of Māori residents across Auckland local boards and we have not had the opportunity to hear their views on this matter.
