Local Board Workshop

Item 1 – 9.30 – 11.00

Community monthly Updates

Presenter/s:                  Deb Doyle, Community  Broker

Michael Alofa, Specialist Advisor

Gustavo Ferreira, Specialist Advisor

Ruth Moloney, Community Activator Raki

Jo Holsted, Community Activator Taitonga

Governance role:          Work programme updates

Proposed Outcome/s:   Receive update on progress

The local board was provided with an update on the April 2025 Community delivery work programme

·        The presentation included the ethnic community plan and an update of the Activators

The local board raised the following points and questions in response to the presentation for the:

ethnic community plan:

·        Sought clarity around member turnover, Ethnic Leader Circle staff confirmed there has been no turnover, with one new member added. The local board inquired whether any support was required; staff advised they are working alongside Auckland Council staff.

Activator Taitonga:

·        The local board questioned if a larger funding allocation to the Activators could be made available for community-led events (e.g., street parties), and whether the administrative burden would be manageable. Staff advised that this would depend on the outcome of the current review, and noted that limited admin capacity may restrict fund distribution. Even small grants can lead to increased administrative tasks.

·        Raised concerns about the Navigators terms ending in December 2025, and questioned how this would affect the activators’ workload. Ethnic Leasers Circle staff indicated a follow-up meeting with the Navigators is planned to review what remains to be done

·        Expressed concern about overall workload and the number of community groups requiring support. The board looks forward to the findings of the upcoming review.

·        Inquired whether a lack of resources is leading to reduced attention in certain geographic areas. Activators agreed that even with more funding, impact remains uncertain. They emphasised that support cannot be forced if community readiness is lacking.
