Auckland Transport • Target Road School Safety Improvements • Birkenhead Town Centre Footpath Upgrade • Hinemoa Street Safety Improvements

Nicholls Governance role: Setting direction. Summary of Discussions: The local board was provided with an update on the Target Road School Safety Improvements, the Birkenhead Town Centre Footpath Upgrade, and the Hinemoa Street Safety Improvements. Target Road School Safety Improvements The local board raised the following points and questions in response to the presentation: · Clarified project is funded via the road safety budget, with completion expected by end of June 2026. · Questioned feasibility of raised crossings. · Raised safety concerns, particularly around blind corners and signage for diverse communities.
Birkenhead Town Centre Footpath Upgrade The local board raised the following points and questions in response to the presentation: · Questioned potential for co-funding with Auckland Transport. · Emphasised a staged approach to delivery and need to align footpath upgrades with the wider town centre. · Suggested priority focus on high-use areas while minimising disruption during peak retail periods. · Queried any impacts on underground utilities in the town centre. · Indicated preference for maximising upgrade coverage within budget, and avoiding premium options. · Supported group site visit to view paver options. Hinemoa Street Safety Improvements The local board raised the following points and questions in response to the presentation: · Expressed concern about a recent crash; advocated for additional speed calming. · Noted constraints due to bends and driveways, limiting placement of speed cushions. · Suggested alternative treatments such as a raised island near the corner. · Emphasised need to prioritise safety interventions. · Suggested that health and safety risks should fall under Auckland Transport’s core responsibilities.
Next Steps: · Staff to action feedback received. · Reports coming to a local board business meeting.
