She was dedicated to the protection and enhancement of Te Reo and Te Ao Maori.
She was an integral part of the whanau au Hoani Waititi Marae.

Resolution number WTK/2025/55 MOVED by Chairperson G Presland, seconded by Member L Manley: That the Waitākere Ranges Local Board:
a) āhukahuka / acknowledge the passing of Janet Clews:
Janet Clews recently passed away.
She was one of the best known and most committed of local body politicians.
She diligently served the west for over 50 years.
She was previously a Glen Eden Borough Councillor, the Mayor of Glen Eden, a Waitākere City Councillor, deputy chair of the Waitākere Ranges Local Board and a Portage Licence Trust trustee.
I had a great deal to do with her over an extended period of time.
She was one of the best local government politicians I have met. She was always kind and considerate, thoughtful and totally dedicated to her job. She was always prepared and her review of the accuracy of minutes was legendary.
There is much of how she conducted that I have tried to emulate. She was an ideal role model as a leader.
She was very kind. I can recall in 2004 the day after I was voted out of office and Janet rang me to check how I was.
I regret having something to do with the curtailment of her career. In 2013 the success of the ticket I was a member of meant that she was voted out of office.
This was a bitter sweet moment for me because she was always a constructive member of the board and I was sad to see her go.
I was pleased that progressives on the Portage Licensing Trust voted her as a Director on West Auckland Trusts Services Limited, an important position that she handled well.
She was a Portage Licensing Trust trustee untill 2022.
She was an absolute formidable local figure and until recently was still actively involved in the local community.
Moe mai ra Janet, moe mai ra.
