Acknowledgement - Passing of Elaine Tollen

Resolution number MR/2025/74

MOVED by Chairperson M Winiata, seconded by Member A Cunningham-Marino:

That the Manurewa Local Board:

a)          acknowledge the passing of Elaine Tollen.

Today we wish to remember and honour in particular someone whose legacy of service to Manurewa spans more than half a century.

For a community to grow and thrive it will always need its fair share of volunteers who are unremitting in their determination to succeed. Today we honour one such person.

The Netball Manurewa Community and Events Centre situated on the corner of Browns Road and Dalgety Drive is a community facility with a long history, and it has an important role for Manurewa’s future.

Not many people realise this now, but the site where the Centre now stands was once a largely barren reserve.

Some 55 years ago, in 1970 the Manurewa District Netball Association was established. Inaugural president Noeline Walsh – who has since retired to Warkworth – and her committee of volunteers would fundraise for more than a decade to ensure the construction of a community facility for netball, a community facility for all.

Tonight, we honour one of those early pioneers who was part of that journey.

Elaine Tollen was a member of the Netball Manurewa story from the beginning. The raffles, the housie evenings, the submissions, the advocacy, the fundraising, the working bees, the coaching, the player registrations, the training nights, the injuries, the goals, the tears, the victories and the defeats.

Elaine has seen it all, Elaine been part of the journey from the very beginning to the present day.

Arguably, Netball Manurewa was the beneficiary of Elaine’s trusted reputation; professionally, she worked as the City Planner’s EA for many years and she knew the people and built confidence wherever she went.

The are mayors and councillors and city managers and officers and business owners and sponsors and people who could open doors – Elaine worked to ensure that every single one of them did so for Netball Manurewa.

There are generations of girls and boys, men and women who enjoy their sport and who fellowship at Netball Manurewa because of our friend, Elaine Tollen.

On this day, Manurewa honours a friend to all and a volunteer whose advocacy is arguably unsurpassed and will be recorded forever more with the highest honour the Local Board can present; her name etched on Te Mana O Manurewa as an honoured citizen of Manurewa

Please stand and join me in a moments silence as we remember and honour Elaine Tollen.
