Landowner approval and variation to the community lease for Tennis Auckland Region Incorporated at 1 Tennis Lane, Grafton

Resolution number ADCCC/2025/19

MOVED by Chairperson D Simpson, seconded by Deputy Chairperson S Trotman:  

That the Pukekawa / Auckland Domain Committee:

a)   whakaae / approve landowner approval for the installation of the membrane roof and associated works.

b)   whakaae / approve a variation to the lease for Tennis Auckland Region Incorporated at 1 Tennis Lane, Grafton, Auckland dated 2011 and variation dated 21 May 2017 to extend the primary use within the Primary Area (centre court) to include other recreational activities and events.

c)   tuhi ā-taipitopito / note the game of tennis will remain the main purpose of the lessee and centre court.

d)   tuhi ā-taipitopito / note that public notification for Auckland Council’s intention to vary the lease to Tennis Auckland Region Incorporated at 1 Tennis Lane Grafton Auckland has been undertaken.

e)   tuhi ā-taipitopito / note that no objections to the notified proposal of the lease variation to Tennis Auckland Region Incorporated at 1 Tennis Lane, Grafton, Auckland were received.

Auckland Museum update report

 

Note:   changes were made to the original recommendation, adding new clauses b), c) and d), as a Chair’s recommendation.

That the Auckland Domain Committee:

a)      whiwhi / receive the Auckland Museum update report

b)         tono / request staff to investigate storytelling opportunities about the rich history of the domain in partnership with mana whenua, the Auckland Museum, the Domain Committee and Dr Lucy Mackintosh

d)         tautoko / support the continuation of the one-way system in the Titoki Street Carpark as requested in this museum update report.

e)         whakamihi / thank the Museum for the ongoing support of the Auckland Domain Committee.

Pukekawa / Auckland Domain – work programme and general update

Note:   changes were made to the original recommendation, amending clause b) and adding new clause c), as a Chair’s recommendation.

That the Auckland Domain Committee:

a)       whiwhi / receive the Pukekawa / Auckland Domain – general and financial update report

b)       tautoko / support the establishment of the additional two sustainable garden areas as outlined in the report

c)       note all green waste other than pest plant waste will be diverted to the restorative gardens areas.

Pukekawa / Auckland Domain – highlights and achievements 2022 - 2025

MOVED by Chairperson D Simpson, seconded by Deputy Chairperson S Trotman:  

That the Auckland Domain Committee:

a)          whiwi / receive the highlights and achievements report for Pukekawa / Auckland Domain

b)          tuhi tīpoka / note the continued investment into new and existing infrastructure in Pukekawa / Auckland Domain during this term, including:

i)       the wintergarden

ii)      band rotunda refurbishment

iii)    several accessibility improvements projects including the new pathway from the Parnell station and commencing the renewal of the Centennial Path and Watsons Bequest pathways

iv)    sportsfield drainage improvements

v)      water feature refurbishments including the Valkyrie fountain

vi)    replacement of a large wastewater pipe network

vii)   grandstand remedial works and painting

viii) introduction of a one-way system in the Titoki Street carpark that has improved the safety and flow of the carpark

ix)    renewal of the garden beside the Auckland Museum’s Te Ara Oranga / southern pathway to Titoki Street and the rose garden near the Kiosk

x)      replacement of the large trees that fell during the 2023 storm events

xi)    planning for the development of sustainable gardens in five sites in the Domain

xii)   the development of a new nature playground in partnership with the community, led by Jeremy Smith and the Auckland Foundation 

c)          whakamihi / thank our regular volunteers who continue to monitor pest traplines within Pukekawa / Auckland Domain

d)          whakamihi / thank the Museum for their support and positive relationship with the Pukekawa/Auckland Domain Committee

e)          tuhi tīpoka / note that the domain played a critical role in retaining flood waters during the 2023 cyclone Gabriel and flood events, lessening the impact on the surrounding properties

f)           tuhi tīpoka / note the Wintergardens have received a 5-star appraisal as a Garden of Significance

g)          tuhi tīpoka / note the band rotanda refurbishment saw this project win a Resene Total Colour - Landscape Colour Maestro Award

h)          tuhi tīpoka / note that 35 projects / project stages were delivered within budget and on time despite the challenges due to Cyclone Gabrielle and heavy weather events

i)            whakamihi / thank Martin van Jaarsveld and supporting staff for all their work over the term.
